I play the notes as they are written, but it is God who makes the music.

Kim D. Bennett, CMP
Certified Music Practitioner
Kim has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Loyola University of Chicago. She also attended Loyola Graduate School completing courses and internships in Special Education. Kim completed a two-year training program with the Music for Healing and Transition Program, Inc. (MHTP), and in 2018 was awarded the credential of Certified Music Practitioner® (CMP) in both Classical Guitar and Voice. MHTP is accredited by the National Standards Board of Therapeutic Musicians. As part of the training program, Kim completed modular courses and practicum work at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore and St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital in Tampa. She volunteered at Naples Community Hospital in 2017, while completing independent practicum under supervision of MHTP’s Regional Coordinator who was a professor at Hillsborough Community College and a practicing CMP at both Mott Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospitals in Tampa.
Kim provides music that is grounded in science and supportive of a healing environment on a one-to-one basis. While the music is selected and performed solely to address the patient’s comfort care in the moment, hospitals, nurses and families frequently report experiencing benefits of the therapeutic music.
Therapeutic Music is not Music Therapy.
A music therapist uses “music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship”. On most of the music therapy websites, you will see a photograph of the music therapist working with a patient who is playing an instrument. A Certified Music Practitioner® provides live, therapeutic music at the bedside and refrains from soliciting the patient’s participation. Think of the difference between a physical therapist and a masseuse. Both have training, and both provide benefits, but the degree and the duration of interaction are different.
Here is a list of differences between music therapy and therapeutic music provided by a Certified Music Practitioner® .
Benefits of therapeutic music
- Less Stress
- Less Anxiety
- Lower blood pressure
- Higher pain tolerance
- A boost to the immune system
- More sleep
- Better sleep
- Distraction from hospital noise and activity in general
